The Death of the Computer

I turned my computer off on Monday night and I was never able to turn it back on again.  Such a sad sad day at the Van Voltenburg house it was!  I never realized just how much stuff I do on the computer.  Not only do I blog & surf the net on the computer, I pay the bills, check our bank accounts, order our prescription medication, plan our budget and submit our medical bills to the insurance company on our computer.

The dead computer went to the hospital and it was determined that it would cost about $475.00 to fix it.  Since we only paid $500 for the thing, we opted out on fixing it.  I am now the proud owner of a new computer with a 400 GB hard drive!  Yes 400 GB!  Is that just an insane amount of storage or what?  The computer came with the Linux operating system and it was a bear to figure out how to take that off and install Windows XP but we got it done.  Then sweet hubby took the memory out of the old computer and put it in the new one.  Then he was able to get the hard drive out of the old computer and I was able to get all my "stuff" off of it too.  I'm telling you the guy is a complete gem! :)

I'm still dealing with dial-up internet service for now but we hope to have our DSL back in about 10 days or so.  I had forgotten just how slow dial-up really is and now that I've been working with it for the last few days I have no idea how I dealt with it for the 4 years before I had DSL.

In other news from our household, we now have DISH TV with DVR.  When we got it I thought I would never record much because I really don't watch that much TV.  Well those 100 available hours on the DVR can get filled up pretty quickly.  I'm totally addicted to HGTV.  I like lots of other channels too but that HGTV is some good stuff.  It has been 13 years since I had cable TV and I am like a kid in a candy store.  Feel free to point me in the direction of any cool shows that you like to watch.

Well gotta run -- the phone line is tied up with dial-up and I'm sure I have several more hours of recorded television programs to watch!

Later you bloggity babes! :)

I HATE earthlink!

I have had internet access troubles for about a week now.  Finally after talking to many, many people at earthlink they determined that I need to pay them $249.oo to "fix" some sort of problem and then I need to buy a new modem for $149 plus another one year committment to them.  I've not been happy with their service for quite some time so I wasn't about to pony up $400 for something I don't like.

Soooo . . . we are switching to SBC and getting Dish TV, DSL, phone service & a Cingular cell phone for less than what we were paying for DSL, phone & cell phone.  Everything is sort of connected and if you get phone service, you get a discount on the DSL, then if you get the DSL, you get a discount on the Dish service, and so on.

But. . . (there's always a but) earthlink buys their DSL service from SBC.  So we can't get the SBC service until earthlink cancels our service.  Well earthlink will only cancel our service on our billing date which is the 25th.  So from now until the 25th, we don't have DSL at our house.  I think I can use the earthlink dial up service but only for 20 hours a month & I have to find one of those stupid CD's with earthlink dial up on it.  Yesterday I went to Kinko's and used their internet long enough to change all my e-mail addresses on everything so I would quit getting e-mails sent to my earthlink accounts.    My daughter was kind enough to let me use her dial up to check e-mails and post here.  But she is not always here when I need to use the internet so these little check ins will be few and far between.

I'll have to post later about our Xmas and New Year's celebrations.  We really did have a good time.  Got to see my whole family for Xmas.  We attended the Miller Brewing New Year's party and found out that we are really bad at Black Jack! LOL

I'll blog again when I get a chance.  Until then, don't miss me too much my blogging buddies! :)

I'm busy with Christmas instead of blogging

I know I know the blog's gonna be jealous!  But I just haven't had time for it.  If you didn't know from previous posts, I'll tell you now.  I am a procrastinator.  I just work really well under pressure so I wait until the last minute.  But it does get me in trouble from time to time.

I waited until the last minute to even make my Christmas cards.  I made them all on Sunday and mailed them out that day.  I am thankful that I am married to Mr. Organized and Mr. I-Never-Procrastinate.  He addressed and signed all the cards as I was making them.  He's a total gem!

And I also waited until the last minute to make some Christmas presents.  I have finished the mini-album for my SIL.  I started it very early (like back in September - gasp!) but I got bored working on it so I put it aside and didn't get it back out until about the beginning of December.  I am still working on my sisters little paper bag album.  It is little and super cute but I just can't get motivated to get going on this one.  I could probably knock it all out in one day if I would just get myself going.  Wish me luck on that! LOL

So I'll be out of town for Christmas and the day after.  I might or might not be back before then so all my fellow bloggers have a very wonderful Christmas and be super careful if you are traveling!

Getting to know you holiday style

Since I don't have much to blog about this is going to have to do.  I'm tagging everyone that reads my blog this week to answer the same questions.  If you answer on your blog, leave me a comment and a link to your blog so we can all get to know each other this holiday!

  1. Hot Chocolate or Egg Nog? Hot Chocolate
  2. Does Santa wrap the presents or just set them under the tree? Santa takes the stockings off the mantle and puts the presents that will fit in there.  Whatever doesn't fit in the stocking, he puts on top of the stocking.
  3. Colored or white lights on the tree/house? I like both, but we have white this year.  I have been informed that  this is the last year for these lights as too many of them have burned out.  Maybe we will go with colored next year.
  4. Do you hang mistletoe? I've never hung mistletoe in my house.  I just kiss my honey whenever I want without worrying about mistletoe! LOL
  5. When do you decorate? When my daughter was little we waited until after her birthday which is at the beginning of December.  I wanted her to feel like her birthday was special and not just an extension of Christmas.  This year, though, we were on the ball and we decorated the Saturday after Thanksgiving.
  6. What is your favorite holiday dish? I like dressing and candied sweet potatos alot but my family always has so many good dishes that it is hard to choose a favorite.
  7. Favorite Holiday memory as a child? I got a bike one year and it was a total surprise.  I still remember that Christmas morning very vividly.
  8. How and when did you learn the truth about Santa? Santa left us notes one year about our presents and the notes were written in my mom's handwriting.  Can you say BUSTED! LOL
  9. Do you open gifts on Christmas Eve? No but we will be celebrating Christmas with my inlaws early.  They are going out of town so we are having Christmas with them on December 17th.
  10. What kind of cookies do you set out for Santa on Christmas Eve? We didn't do cookies when my daughter was little.  She learned all about reindeer food when she was little and I always wound up sprinkling that stuff all over the front yard in the freezing weather on Christmas Eve.  Reindeer food is oatmeal mixed with glitter and it is a HUGE mess.
  11. Snow!  Love it or hate it? Love the look of it especially in nice photos and postcards.  Other than that I can do without it.
  12. Can you ice skate? I've never tried but I'm thinking no because I'm a big ole klutz!
  13. Do you remember your favorite gift? I don't know that I have a particular favorite gift.  I think I love giving more than receiving.  I enjoy seeing everyone opening their presents on Christmas morning.
  14. What is the most important thing about the holidays for you? Spending time with my family.  All of my siblings live in different cities and almost all of our kids are grown up now too.  It gets harder and harder every year to get everyone together.  Family time is so special to me.
  15. What’s your favorite holiday dessert? Not a particular holiday dessert but my mom always makes me an apple pie and a batch of chocolate chip cookies when we spend the holidays with her.  My mom makes the BEST desserts!
  16. What’s your favorite holiday tradition? Probably the time after we eat when we sit around the table talking and telling all the stories from when we were kids or when our kids were little.  Such great memories!
  17. What type of tree? Due to allergies we have a fake tree with the lights already on it.  Got a new one this year and it is pretty.
  18. Which do you prefer, giving or receiving? I enjoy giving -- there is just something so special about seeing someone open a gift and how they light up.  It is hard around here though because my husband is a giver too.  We only want to see the other open presents!
  19. What is your favorite Christmas Carol? God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen/We Three Kings by Barenaked Ladies and Sarah McLachlan
  20. Candy Canes, YUCK or YUM? YUM YUM YUM! I eat them year round.

The holidays are kicking my butt!

Last year I was pretty sick so I didn't feel so much like having Christmas at our house.  We didn't even put up a tree.  I just wasn't into it and didn't feel like messing with all that stuff.

Weeeelllll. . . . this year has been different.  I'm feeling better so I'm really in the Christmas spirit this year.  We have had the tree up since the day after Thanksgiving.  We have lights on the house.  And I've finished almost all of our shopping.  I'm still working on making some scrapbooking things but those will go quickly.  Oh and all of the gifts that I have purchased have already been wrapped too.  I'm just loving it this year.

I discovered the Yankee Candle scent of Mistletoe.  I've had a candle in that scent light in my house almost every day since we put the tree up.  It looks like Christmas around here and smells like Christmas too.  Just love it! :)

Lately for some reason it seems like I only have the ability to use half of my brain.  I keep forgetting things, dropping things, tripping over my feet, falling.  If you can think of something silly, I've probably done it in the last couple of weeks.  All this leads to an even bigger frustration.  I'm having troubles when I'm out Christmas shopping.  Then when I'm having troubles I don't want to call Bruce and tell him because then he'll figure out what his presents are.  (He's super good at figuring out stuff like that.)  So last week I was out shopping and Bruce was out of town for work.  He calls to check on me and I can barely talk to him because I'm lost.  I'm mean totally lost!! But if I told him where I was lost at then he would know instantly what store I was going to and he'd figure out the present.   Arrrggghhh!!!  So 45 minutes later and a refill of the gas tank, I get back on the road and find my way home.

If that wasn't bad enough, then it happens again.  I go to the mall to adopt a couple of angels from the Salvation Army tree and decide to do a little shopping while I'm there.  This is not the mall that I normally go to.  Well the shopping was totally productive.  I got 3 presents for Bruce and also picked up a new dress for his holiday party.  So 3 hours later, I go out to get in the car.  I walk to where I think the car is parked and it is not there.  I can't find the car!  I walked up and down each aisle on that side of the mall.  My car is nowhere to be found.  I finally break down and call Bruce.  I know he's gonna laugh but I can't find the damn car!  Unfortunately he had been called in to work which is about 45 minutes from our house and even further from the mall.  So I was on my own.  Eventually I broke down and walked back into Foley's and asked them to point me to all the doors that lead outside and they immediately knew I had lost my car.

Yes embarrassing but I already have my tree up and most of my presents bought!  So there!! (I know you see me sticking out my tongue, right?!?)

So thankful

I was glad that we got to spend some time with family for Thanksgiving.  We spent Thanksgiving Day with Bruce's family.  The only people at lunch that day were Bruce's parent, Bruce's grandmother and Bruce & I.  It was actually quite nice.  At most family dinners alot of time is spent fussing with Bruce's nephew.  There is always a big discussion about whether he is eating, not eating, minding his manners, getting desert or not, etc.  Thanksgiving day was spent without all of that chaos and our family time was very enjoyable.  We had the traditional turkey, ham, dressing, potatoes, sweet potato pie, etc.  Good good food and I took the day off from my diet to splurge a bit.

After lunch we looked at old photo albums and my mother-in-law actually let me bring home two albums so I could make copies of the photos that I want.  I'm excited to get to see all these photos and it will be fun to get copies for myself so I can put them in my own scrapbooks.

We also had another family dinner on Saturday evening.  We had a second dinner because Bruce's sister & her familiy were in town from Colorado.  They spent Thanksgiving day with other relatives so Saturday was their day to spend with us.  It was a good visit and I enjoyed visiting with them.  We don't see them often so there is never enough time to catch up on everything.  We are still newlyweds and I'm still getting to know my new family and I really enjoy it.

I debated on whether or not I should make a list of the things that I'm thankful for.  I want to make the list but how can you sum up such great things in one little list?  So just know that these things are what made the short list for this year and it changes from year to year and definitely does not include every wonderful thing in my life.

  • I am very thankful that I am living such a wonderful life with my fabulous husband.  I am so glad that we met at the perfect time in both of our lives.
  • I am thankful that all of our girls seem to being doing a good job at finding their way in life.
  • I am thankful that my health is improving so much these days.  I am actually looking forward to each day now instead of not feeling like I can even get out of bed.  So so so wonderful for me!
  • I am thankful that I have come to realize how blessed we are with material things in our life and that I have realized that what we don't have is really just "stuff" that we absolutely can live without.
  • I am thankful that I have realized that I don't have to do things for people to get them to be my friends.  I was constantly doing things for people because I thought they were my friends.  I was always disappointed because they either weren't there for me when I needed them or I found out that they were using me.
  • I am thankful that I have realized that I have zero friends.  I know it sounds strange for me to say I'm thankful for that.  But now knowing that I have zero friends also makes me know that no one is using me.  I have to say I like have no friends as opposed to feeling used and lonely.

So that's the list.  It is by no means everything that I'm thankful for but it hits the high points for now.

I hope that everyone had a terrific Thanksgiving and that you have many blessing to be thankful for also!

Gwen is just as pretty in real life!

So we went to the concert.  The seat were not the up close seats but they were still okay.  Black Eyed Peas opened for them and they are a fun group.  They sang and danced and got the crowd all fired up.   Then Gwen came out!

Gwen2 She is just as pretty in real life as she is on TV and in magazines.  I must point out that this concert is a total chick concert.  She changed clothes no less than 8 times and I think it was probably more.  There lots of times when there were heavy guitar riffs and background dancing going on while Gwen was off changing clothes.  I just loved it.  She's got such a cool sense of fashion so every time she ran off stage to change I couldn't wait until she came back.  My husband on the other hand probably could have stayed home and been just as happy.  He has no interest in fashion or the dancers for that matter.  So he was extremely glad that we got the tickets for free.  And if the truth was told, I think he would have been pissed if we had paid for the tickets.  He didn't enjoy it at all.  He described the concert as a fashion show set to music with a little singing thrown in as an afterthought.

I was a tad disappointed in the song selection.  I was hoping that she might do a few No Doubt songs but not one No Doubt song was heard all night.  Basically she came out and sang all the songs on her new CD save one.  Then she came back to sing one song for an encore.  That one song just happened to be the ever-popular Hollaback Girl.

So it was a fun night.  But if you are thinking of going to the concert, let me just warn you that it would be a great girls' night out but not such a great date night.  I'm just thankful my hubby doesn't hold a grudge for me dragging him out to stuff like this sometimes! LOL
